Jaswinder Singh Bains, more popularly known as Jazzy B, is called the crown prince of bhangra. Born in Punjab and raised in Vancouver, the transatlantic singer-songwriter has been in the music scene since 1993 and flits between England, India and Canada. He has released 11 studio albums, and also sang for Bollywood movies like 'Rush' (Dil Toh Hai Fukraa), 'Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns' (Jugni) and 'Shaadi Ke Side Effects' (Harrys Not A Brahmachari). Fresh after collaborating with rappers Hard Kaur and Scottish Bhangra group Tigerstyle on a dance number for upcoming film 'Dilliwaali Zaalim Girlfriend', Jazzy B is ecstatic.
How did Zaalim Dilli happen?
I met the director Japinder Kaur socially and she seemed interested in working with me. She was closely involved with the music of the film. Hard Kaur was roped in and then Raj and Pop from Glasgow-based Tigerstyle joined us in creating Zaalim Dilli. The two brothers have also done all the mixing and mastering. They are good producers and are also doing a couple of songs for my new album. It was great working with Hard Kaur. She has worked with me earlier for a song on another album. She's a tough worker. She started off in England, made her way to India and proved her mettle here. She's a strong woman who stands her ground and says it like it is.
Zaalim Dilli is actually the title song of the film. It was also supposed to be the film's title, but the producers changed their mind later. It is a bubbly dance song that will appeal to a wide set of people. Even my seven-year-old son had a smirk on his face when he heard the first recording. He asked me to play it again and memorised all the words. When a child immediately takes to a song, one knows it has potential.
